Message From jl

Hi Everyone!

I had a hard time getting started on today's issue, last week. It was a difficult week for the duck population here on my little lake, and they kept me busy.

Something attacked one of the females one night. She had a wound on her lower back, her tail is completely gone and she couldn't use one leg. The alpha drake must have tried to help her and ended up with a mangled leg, himself.

Animals in the wild are amazing. I could only get close enough to throw them food several times a day. Another of the drakes stood guard over them day and night. I had to make the food land right in front of them or it was too difficult for them to reach it.

Somehow, when they got to the water, they could both swim, even with the unworkable legs. And after five days, they were both walking, although with a limp.

Very sad week for the wildlife. I've got to learn that just because I can get animals in the wild to eat from my hand - doesn't make them pets.

Have I told you about the young squirrel that comes right up to my patio door and sits up, waiting for me to come give him some bread? Well, that's another story for another day.

SOLUTIONS and WARNINGS

We need do to a bit of interaction, today. I have a couple of valuable tips FROM readers - and a question I'm going to ask to have answered BY readers.

I warned you several months ago ... when the economy tanks, scams skyrocket. It happens every time. Now, we're starting to see it, and buyers will grow even more cautious than usual. They'll have to be!

So, it's more important than ever to have that iCop seal prominently placed on your web site(s). iCop - and its members - have a great reputation. In these times, you can't afford NOT to have the iCop seal!

MOVING ON ...

First, a heads up from Tom Mahoney of Merchant 911. He wrote:

-----------
According to an article posted in Auction Bytes, seller protection for eBay sellers does not offer the same level of protection as PayPal does, even though they use the same gateway. Speculation is that there are some PCI compliance issues at e-Bay. This could be a big issue for eBay sellers.

So, if you sell on eBay, you should definitely read that article.

And, BTW - if you are an online merchant and you haven't joined Merchant 911, I STRONGLY suggest you join that organization. Won't cost you a dime, so there's no excuse for anyone not to take advantage of what Tom provides!

SECOND TIP

Last week, we alerted you to a scam that appeared to be run by etaxhotline.com. The bottom line involved a stolen debit card number, so it's hard to know exactly where to point the finger. However, etaxhotline.com was involved and they failed to respond to the violated consumer. AND, they're the ones who got the money.

I heard from Chris Jackson who knew the solution for this type of thing. I knew about this - but, I haven't HEARD much about it, so I'd forgotten it exists.

Chris wrote:

Dear jl,

I have a solution that would have prevented the "etaxhotline.com" debacle before it got started and you may want to share it with the other readers.

This is protection for ONLINE shopping: Are you aware of the 'new' "PayPal Button?” It installs in your Browser, and with it you can create "Virtual MasterCard numbers" that are ONLY valid for that ONE Merchant Account.

The "default" is to create a number that is ONLY available for that ONE transaction, but you can ALSO selectively create a Virtual Number that can be used repeatedly (for example... for a Membership), but ONLY by that one merchant account!

I hope that helps!

Chris Roy Jackson

Check it out at the PayPal web site.

NOW, the QUESTION

William sent me the following question, and I decided to pass it on to you. Reason being - we'll get a variety of solutions, which I will then pass along to everyone.

------------
Hi,

I have a comment for you. I keep getting these emails stating I've won millions of dollars or I need to help some bank officer collect millions of dollars.

I keep reporting them as spam/phishing emails. This doesn't work, they just change their names and resend every day.

I can report the Paypal ones to paypal as spoof@paypal.com and they send me an email thanking me and say they are disabling the email.

How do I get rid of the others??

Thank you.

------------

We all know the email he's talking about. I've “won” so many lotteries I'm a mega-trillionaire, by now. (HA! Microsoft Word tells me there's no such word as “trillionaire.”)

And, of course, all the people trying to get you to help move all those kings', widows' orphans', etc., money out of a country. This one is so slimy, now I even get one claiming to come from an American serviceman in Iraq.

SO - how do YOU get rid of that email? Please let me know and I'll pass on the information to help the many who have the same problem.

Have a fabulous week and ... keep on keepin' on!

"Memphis, Tennessee's REAL 911 Calls"

Dispatcher: 9-1-1 What is the nature of your emergency?

Caller: I'm trying to reach nine eleven but my phone doesn't have an eleven on it.

Dispatcher: This is nine eleven.

Caller: I thought you just said it was nine-one-one

Dispatcher: Yes, ma'am nine-one-one and nine-eleven are the same thing.

Caller: Honey, I may be old, but I'm not stupid.

Dispatcher: 9-1-1 What's the nature of your emergency?

Caller: My wife is pregnant and her contractions are only two minutes apart.

Dispatcher: Is this her first child?

Caller: No, you idiot! This is her husband!

Dispatcher: 9-1-1

Caller: Yeah, I'm having trouble breathing. I'm all out of breath. Darn...I think I'm going to pass out.

Dispatcher: Sir, where are you calling from?

Caller: I'm at a pay phone. North and Foster.

Dispatcher: Sir, an ambulance is on the way. Are you an asthmatic?

Caller: No

Dispatcher: What were you doing before you started having trouble breathing?

Caller: Running from the Police.

Dispatcher: 9-1-1 - What is your emergency?

Caller: Someone broke into my house and took a bite out of my ham and cheese sandwich.

Dispatcher: Excuse me?

Caller: I made a ham and cheese sandwich and left it on the kitchen table and when I came back from the bathroom, someone had taken a bite out of it.

Dispatcher: Was anything else taken?

Caller: No, but this has happened to me before, and I'm sick and tired of it!
