Hi Everyone!

I'll be keeping today's issue short. I'm working on a project I'll announce next Monday. Like everything else in my life, it's taken longer than I anticipated.

It's always a little hard for me to stay focused at the beginning of summer, anyway. I find myself staring out at my little lake and the surrounding woods, flashing back to summers with my brothers and cousins out on our grandparents' farm.

But, that's okay. The new project's gonna be great, and you're gonna love it! And, to make up for the wait, I'm going to show you the funniest thing I've ever seen, today.

But First ...

I've forgotten where I picked this up, but I don't suppose anyone can own the list, anyway. I believe, no matter how you might feel about global warming, we can all agree we DO need to do something about our trash on this planet.

The list contains some interesting ways to cut trash and help the environment. Some of these I had never thought of, but they're certainly easy enough.

In case you can't get a handle on just how much these things help, consider this. My home is Austin, Texas. Austin was one of the first places to take on recycling. And, all of us were very serious about it. We wanted our beautiful little town clean!

Back in 1991, three national magazines wrote stories about Austin being the “greenest city in the USA.” So, our population went from 240,000 to two and a half million in a matter of less than five years.

Now, the trick is to make the whole world clean, so millions of people don't try to cram themselves into one spot.

We all like clean! Some won't like some of these ideas; some won't have the opportunity to do some of them. But, if we each only do part of it, it would help - a LOT!

So, here are some simple things we can do:

  • No soda in cans
  • No water in plastic bottles
  • No coffee in disposable cups
  • No throwaway plastic razors and blade cartridges
  • No Indian food in throwaway takeout tubs
  • No Italian food in plastic throwaway tubs
  • No Chinese food in plastic throwaway tubs
  • Take your own reusable containers to takeout joints
  • Buy milk in returnable, reusable glass bottles
  • Shop for honey and pickled veggies and other goods in jars only from merchants who will take back the jars and reuse them
  • Return egg and berry cartons to the vendors at the farmers' market for reuse
  • Use neither paper nor plastic bags - bring your own reusable bags when grocery shopping
  • Cancel your magazine and newspaper subscriptions and read online
  • Put an end to the junk mail tree killing
  • Carry a reusable cup and water bottle
  • Carry reusable cloths for everything from blowing your nose to drying your hands
  • Politely ask restaurant servers to take away paper and plastic napkins, placemats, straws, cups and single-serving containers
  • Pretend McDonalds and Burger King and all their paper and plastic wrappers just don't exist
  • Buy no candy bars, gum, lollypops or ice cream that is individually packaged
  • Make your own household cleaners to avoid all the throwaway plastic bottles
  • Use baking soda from a recyclable container to brush your teeth
  • Use baking soda for a deodorant to avoid the plastic containers that deodorant typically comes in
  • Use baking soda for shampoo to avoid plastic shampoo bottles
  • Keep a worm bin to compost food scraps into nourishment that can be returned to the earth instead of toxins that seep from the landfills
  • Switch to cloth diapers
  • Not buying anything disposable
  • Not buying anything in packaging
  • Shop for food only from the bulk bins and from the local farmer's market where food is unpackaged and fresh
  • Forget about prepackaged, processed food of any description
  • Give your second-hand clothes away to charities
  • Offer products you no longer need on Freecycle instead of throwing them away
  • Use old clothes for rags around the home instead of paper towels

Leaving You With a Smile

"What's Really Important?"

In 1923, Who Was:

1. President of the largest steel company?

2. President of the largest gas company?

3. President of the New York stock Exchange?

4. Greatest wheat speculator?

5. President of the Bank of International Settlement?

6. Great Bear of Wall Street?

These men were considered some of the worlds most successful of their days..

Now, 86 years later, the history book asks us, if we know what ultimately became of them.

The Answers:

1. The president of the largest steel company, Charles Schwab, died a pauper.

2. The president of the largest gas company, Edward Hopson, went insane.

3. The president of the e NYSE, Richard Whitney, was released from prison to die at home.

4. The greatest wheat speculator, Arthur Cooger, died abroad, penniless.

5. The president of the Bank of International Settlement, shot himself.

6 The Great Bear of Wall Street, Cosabee Livermore, also committed suicide

However, in that same year, 1923, the PGA Champion and the winner of the most important golf tournament, the US Open, was Gene Sarazen.

What became of him? He played golf until he was 92, died in 1999 at the age of 95. He was financially secure at the time of his death.

The Moral:

Screw work.
Play golf.
